Hawaii: Day 2 – The Feast

Get the Flash Player to see this player.
Obviously, this video is taken the morning after the feast.
But it was applicable.

We made alot of kabobs.
Enough for 3 dinners actually.

And plenty of gourmet raw tuna.
It was delicious.

Our friends brought the Rainbow Cake.

And pork stuffed bread.
Which Ryan told me was cat.
Apparently, thats a running joke in Hawaii.
But, I did only see 1 stray the entire time we were there.
Just saying.

At first, we were a little nervous.
Mostly, because these guys had been so nice
and I was afraid we may not be nice enough.
“The Messick” sense of humor can only be defined by one word:

Asshole.

However, as Colin began to grill,
our new friends joined us outside,
I heard 3 thrings that set me at ease.

Sarcasm.
Jokes.
And a few curse words.

Thank god, I thought.
We can relax.
We’re not that different at all.
Except that they were wearing winter clothes.
To them it was cold.

In Hawaiian terms thats
60 to 70 degrees outside.

I would have more documentation of this
but the HOUR LONG video I recorded was corrupt.

Ryan, the “leader” of their group,
or there family, I should say,
suggested that everyone explain
what part they had in the planning of Colin’s surprise.

I’m gonna pull photos from their Facebooks.

Christine Davis (cousin)

She said “All I did was repost.”
Her Sept 29th post said:

Calling all friends: My twin cousin Colin (born a month apart, neighboring sister wombs) was dignosed about a month ago with brain cancer. In support im reaching out to ask u to visit colinsbraincancer.com or terminatethetumor.com and buy a 5$ bracelet to help. I bought 6 : ) a little back history: last time i visited, Colin was a bit of an Arnold schwarzenegger fan so the quote on the bracelet fits perfectly. Love you Colin

Then, I got this message from her on October 1st:

Hey,
So i sent out a update to all my friends to visit the website and possibly help, and this is the email i got in return from one of my hawaii friends.

Shannon (aka Betty)

She’s the one who responded to Christine’s post.
Her email said:

Ok, first off- please DO NOT share this with anyone!

I visited your cousin Colin’s page after you posted it. I saw that one of his wishes was to visit the LOST set and I just knew that someone I know or a friend of a friend could somehow make it happen so I reposted. A friend of mine has arranged for Colin to be able to visit the set. He is currently working on transportation and accommodations. He is trying to get a sponsor so that the trip can be a gift for Colin. Right now, Hawaiian Air has offered 20% off airfare for Colin and anyone in his party who would accompany him. So, as of right now he would have the arrangements with the studio but he would have to pay his transportation and accommodations. My friend Ed is working on it though- to at least get the cost as low as possible if he cannot find a sponsor. I need contact information for Colin’s brother Eric so that we can find out what kind of special accommodations Colin might need and when he may be able to make the visit. My friend would like to keep this as a surprise right now at least until everything get’s finalized so we would like to work with Eric to make this happen. So if you can, please send me Eric’s email as soon as possible and don’t mention anything to anyone, please!

Mahalo,
Betty :)

And this was the beginning.

Ed, our contact to the set, wasn’t there.
We’ll meet him later.

On October 19th, only 2 weeks before the trip
3 more people were added to the facebook discussion thread.

Sheri (they spoke for her. I don’t think she has facebook)
Marcus.
Arbine.
Ryan.

They are all members of a community service group
that Shannon was a part of.

Sheri

I can’t find a photo of her.
Anyone reading this who has one can send it to me.

Her brother worked at the Royal Gardens Hotel
(where they film parts of lost)
She got us a room comped on the last day of the trip.

Marcus and Arbine

Before we ended up going through priceline,
Arbine worked with Hawaiian Air to get a good deal on tickets.
There were many possibilities we tossed around

Marcus, had contact with the rental car company.
Remember how we got a jeep for 6 days for $123.00 total?
That was Marcus.

On the last day of the trip he drove us around for a 7 hour LOST tour.

Arbine is the one who worked with the Kelly
from the Kokua Hawaii Foundation.
Kelly is he one who gave us her house on the beach for a week.

Ryan (aka The Leader) and Shar.

In addition to leading the community on Colin’s behalf,
he and his wife Shar donated their flier miles
to get our cousin to Hawaii.

They were also the first people to great us after landing in Hawaii
with food staples for the week.

You are going to see some of Shar’s awesome handiwork
on our last day.
She could have been a prop coordinator for the Dharma Initiative.
You’ll see.

Ryan made a very moving statement in our round the room introductions.
He said:

“We did this because we could.”
They were in the right place, at the right time,
and had an opportunity to give, though to a stranger,
so why not give?

Why not do it?
