When Colin told me that he hadn’t been able to go for the past few days, my first thought was:
“Now, I can say he’s clinically full of shit.”
This wasn’t funny long.
He had been having trouble with nausea lately,
as most of you should know, but at some point it changed.
He was having another kind of nausea.
He described it as feeling like he was poisoned, I believe.
Later, I learned the pre-cursor to this sensation was bloating feeling.
Like something was stopped up in his digestive tract.
He tried to go the bathroom, but that didn’t work.
He instead made himself throw up, and that made him feel better…kind of.
I guess it’s like keying the car of your cheating spouse.
You feel better, but doesn’t really solve the problem…
It may have taken longer for me to understand what Colin was going through because boys don’t communicate serious issues effectively. Usually, these subjects are reflected upon through movie and video game quotes and there just aren’t many concerning a man’s inability to “clear level 2.”

Had I been skirting the right question for sake of his comfort?
That doesn’t sound like me…
The key was what he meant by going to the bathroom didn’t help.
It didn’t help because…nothing was coming out.
He was blocked.
And to think 6 weeks ago we’d have welcomed anything that would shut down Colin’s cyanide gas factory.
See chemo side effects…
I even considered anonymously alerting the UN that Colin was developing WMD’s in his trousers.
I abandoned the idea only because I thought he’s miss read the purpose and take it as a compliment.
Another fact about boys:
We can turn almost anything into a compliment.
Why it translates into a feeling of being poisoned, or feeling like throwing up helps, I can only hypothesize that your body knows nothing getting out…so you should stop taking things in. I can’t prove this and haven’t found research that supports this, but it makes sense.

And so my brother presented me with a new task:
Exorcise the Demon Within
To be continued…
